Perfect Couch Companion
Now that we are all advised to stay home, we get to spend more time lounging around and catching up on all those series and movies saved in your entertainment system. Having an armchair caddy is the perfect companion to all these hours you’re about to spend on your sofa.
An armchair caddy is a handy chair organizer where you can put everything you might need within reach. Whether it be the TV remote, your mobile charger, or even some healthy snacks to munch on, having your own armchair caddy definitely helps you in your daily life.
And while you can surely buy one, you can’t really go to the store without endangering yourself and the people around you. So, why not just make it at home? That way, you can tailor the dimensions of your DIY organizer, customize the number of pockets, and tailor everything according to your needs!
In this article, we show you how to create your own armchair caddy using some simple materials and easy sewing techniques!
What You’ll Need:
- your choice of fabric
- lining fabric
- tape measure or fabric ruler
- scissors
- sewing machine
Step 1: Plan and Measure
The first step in any DIY process is to plan and conceptualize what it is that you’re making. In your case of an armchair caddy, you need to decide what items you’re going to put in the pockets and how many pockets you’re doing.
While you can basically put whatever you want, it is important to have a rough idea of the average size of the items you’ll be putting in your organizer. That way, you won’t have to worry about an item not fitting because you didn’t make the pockets big enough.
It is advised to err on the side of caution and plan your sofa caddy dimensions with big panels that would fit magazines, beer bottles, and etcetera. In this how-to, we’re doing four pockets for your TV remote, magazine, phone, and glasses with corresponding measurements above.
Step 2: Cut and Mark
Cut your measured pockets and mark the hems for all. For the top hem, mark two half-inch folds, and for the bottom hem, mark half an inch.
Step 3: Press Hems Flat
Once all your pieces are marked, fold and press them with an iron. Pressing helps flatten your fabric so it’s easier to sew.
Step 4: Sew Hems and Align
Sew all the hems according to their folds. Once you’re done with all the pocket pieces, grab your remote pocket and line it up against your back piece.
Your back piece is basically your outer piece that will serve as your anchor holding all the pockets together. The wider your back piece is, the wider your armchair caddy will be.
Step 5: Sew Against Outer Piece
Once you’ve lined up your remote pocket, sew it onto the bottom most part of your outer piece. Make sure that you align them properly and that you leave the top side open, otherwise, you won’t have a pocket!

Step 6: Stitch on Mark Lines
Mark your lines on your pocket and stitch them using your sewing machine. You may use a basic running stitch with this one since your mark lines will serve as a divider that will give you more individual pockets on your organizer.
Step 7: Repeat Process on Magazine Pocket
When you’re done with the bottom pocket on your outer piece, grab your big magazine pocket and repeat steps 4-6. Think about your magazine pocket as your outer piece this time around, and your glass and phone pockets as your remote pocket from the previous steps.
Mark your lines on these smaller pockets as well and run stitches along them.
Step 8: Line All Pieces Together
Once you’ve got your magazine pocket stitched with your glass and phone pockets and all their divider pockets, you’re going to grab it and place it on top of your outer piece from earlier.
Align the magazine pocket 1.5 inches above the remote pocket and pin in place.
Step 9: Sew It All Together as One Piece
Sew your magazine pocket against the outer piece. When you’re done attaching it, you should have one large piece of vertical fabric with numerous pockets.
Go ahead and check all the pockets if the stitching for all the dividers is strong enough and if all individual pockets are spacious enough to hold your items. You may do this by inserting your arms in each pocket to loosen up the opening.
Step 10: Time for Lining Fabric!
Place your lining that’s the same measurements as your outer piece. Make sure that your lining is facing your outer piece right side down.
Pin it together with the outer piece along the outer corners, leaving an opening gap for when you turn it inside out. Stitch along your pin using your sewing machine.
Step 11: Turn it Inside Out!
Turn it inside out and stitch close the opening gap. And you’re done! You have with you a fully-functioning armchair caddy!
