Reality television has been a great source of entertainment since the advent of television itself. When Dutch reality show Big Brother was aired in 1999, it racked in tonnes of viewers and spawned many spinoffs in other countries. The concept is based on the critically acclaimed novel ‘1984‘ written by prolific author, George Orwell. The theme explores the concept of constant surveillance and every housemate is equipped with personal microphones and is under the view of the radar 24/7.
When Big Brother was launched in India, it was called Bigg Boss. The first show of the franchise debuted in 2006 and featured an all-star cast. Bigg Boss is based on the celebrity version of Big Brother which is called Celebrity Big Brother, and Munna Bhai actor, Arshad Warsi initially hosted the show. The show has had many celebrities appearing as housemates, from actresses like Koena Mitra to cricketer S. Sreekanth. Bigg Boss has also spawned many iconic memes from “What is this behavior, Pooja?” to anything said by the controversial personality, Dolly Bindra.
