Useful and Decorative 4×4 Wood Crafts You Can Finish Over the Weekend
1. 4×4 Wood Picture Frame
This quick and easy craft is perfect for decorating your home, office, and pretty much any other empty space. With some personal touches, it can also make for a great gift for any occasion.
What You’ll Need:
- 1″ thick 4×4 wood scraps
- Paint brush
- Dark Wood Stain
- Glue (matte finish) or Mod Podge (shiny finish)
- Picture
Do-It-Yourself:
- Start by picking your scraps. 1″ thick scrap wood should have enough width for it to stand on its own.
- Wax or stain your wood, but make sure to leave the face of the frame unstained. Small projects can benefit from using wax instead of wood stain as it’s easy to wipe on using a rag.
- Cut the picture to a size that matches your 4×4 frame before covering the face of the frame using glue.
- Carefully place the photo on the frame and wipe it smooth using a towel.
- Cover your photo using glue and leave it to dry.
- Finally, just look for the perfect spot to place your new office or home decoration in and there you have it – a classic wood frame to preserve some of your most memorable experiences.
2. 4×4 Wood Luminaries
This is yet another simple and inexpensive way to use some of that scrap wood you’ve most likely accumulated from past projects.
You can use these little trinkets to line your driveway, porch, or window. They can also make for great Halloween or Christmas decorations.
While you can use tea lights for these wood luminaries, it’s also highly recommended to use battery-operated alternatives instead if you’re leaving them indoors and with little to no supervision.

- 4×4 wood cut into squares
- Power drill and 1-1/2″ spade bit
- Sander or sandpaper
- Spray paint
- Other decorative items depending on the occasion
Do-It-Yourself:
- If you haven’t already, start by cutting your 4×4 wood into little squares. Make sure to measure the width so you match your length and height to it and cut your wood into perfect squares.
- With your spade bit in hand, drill a hole at the top of every block.
- Use your spray paint to color the blocks with your desired color. If you want to give your luminaries a distressed kind of look, use your sander and let some of the wood show.
- Additionally, you can also glaze or stain your wood to give it a more classic and vintage aesthetic.
- Decorate it for the occasion! Ribbons that match the colors of the holiday are a classy and elegant addition to these luminaries. These should be easy enough to remove when the holidays are done so you can still leave your little wood projects up as year-round decor.
3. 4×4 Wood Pencil Holder
Want to give your kids’ teachers a small token of appreciation? Why not fashion a personalized wood pencil holder from all that old scrap wood and have your kids give their teachers a little gift.
What You’ll Need:
- 4×4 wood
- Drill
- Sander
- Paint
Do-It-Yourself:
- Cut your 4×4 wood at 6″ long.
- Drill holes into the cut wood with a bit that matches the size of your pencils.
- Sand the entire thing until it’s smooth before either painting it or using wood stain on it.
- Before you hand it to your kids to give to their teachers, complete the package with a set of new pencils their teachers can use and lend to students.
- If you want to go the extra mile, you can also tag each pencil with a “Return to Teacher” reminder so the kids never forget to give it back after they’re done borrowing it.

4. 4×4 Wood Paperweight
A paperweight designed like an apple is another cute and easy wood working project perfect for a teacher’s desk or even for your own kids’ study tables. Here’s how to do it complete with a stem and some leaves.
What You’ll Need:
Do-It-Yourself:
- Cut your 4×4 wood into 4″ pieces. Then, with a miter saw, cut all four sides at 30 degrees.
- Drill a 3/4″ hole at the center of your wood before inserting a 3″ long 3/4″ dowel. Paint the body red for the body of the apple and the stem brown.
- With the paint dry, sand all edges until they’re smooth.
- Cut some 5/32″ basswood leaves using a jigsaw before painting them green and again, sanding the edges.
- Drill a hole for the wire before threading the wire through the holes and twisting it snug.
- Wrap the same wire around your wood apple’s stem base before twisting the leaves snug.
- Paint 5″ pieces of flat moulding using your black chalkboard paint. Finally, glue and nail your chalkboard piece into place and write the teacher’s name on it using white chalk marker.
5. 4×4 Wood Alphabet Blocks
This simple wood craft is great for decorating your kids’ bedrooms! As a bonus, you’ll most likely finish this in less than an hour!
What You’ll Need:
- 4×4 wood
- Spray paint
- Pen and sharpie
- Paint and paintbrush
Do-It-Yourself:
- Cut your 4×4 wood into perfect little squares. Make sure to measure the width so you can cut a perfect square out of it.
- Spray paint your wood pieces and leave it to dry.
- While waiting for the paint to dry, print your letters out with the font of your choice.
- Mark the center of the block and the center of the letter. With the two aligned, use a pen to trace around the letter heavily.
- Now use your paint to color the inside of the indent.
- When you’re done, use a sharpie to add a shadow to each letter.
