Ground Beef Sent to 9 States Is Recalled Due to Contamination

Over 2,000 pounds of raw ground beef has been recalled due to contamination from “clear, thin plastic” according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The affected beef originated at Amity Packing Company Inc. (Illinois) and was potentially sent to retailers in nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The specific product being recalled is Pre Brands LLC’s 1-lb vacuum-sealed beef. The beef, which may contain traces of plastic, was produced on January 6, 2020, and labeled 95% lean, 5% fat, with the establishment number “EST. 6916” printed on the packaging, according to photos provided by the USDA.

As of this reporting, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reaction from consuming the beef but the recall was announced after two consumers reportedly found clear, thin, pliable plastic in their ground beef. In a statement, the FSIS warned “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
