Water plastic bottles are widely used in a lot of households and are one of the most recyclable materials out there. Aside from being just your portable liquid container, you’ll be amazed at how much more it can become. Let’s think outside the box and utilize these bottles to its full potential!
During this time of quarantine where we are all asked to stay indoors — the world slowed down. Many businesses stopped, factories halted operation, and there are less people on the street contributing to pollution. What better way to help our planet to heal more than to recycle.
Plastic bottle recycling can lessen waste in our world and reuse them for other purposes. Here are some ideas and DIY projects you can do with these plastic water bottles.

Turn Your Used Water Plastic Bottles to Something Useful
1. DIY Plastic Bottle Chair
You can choose from making a small chair or a big chair but whichever you choose, you’ll only need a maximum of 38 2-liter bottles. What’s fun about this project is no one will be able to tell what they’re made of until they look at it closely.
2. Snack Storage
You don’t always have to storm the mall every time you need a canister for kitchen supplies such as your condiments. You can always recycle a clear plastic bottle and transform it into your new container for sugar, salt, coffee creamer, or the like.
Need a DIY salt and pepper shaker, perhaps? Just poke some hole on the cap and it should work just as fine as your typical container.
3. DIY Plastic Water Bottle Planter
If you’re looking to add more decorations in your room, this definitely fits the bill.
- Cut a 2-liter water bottle and use the bottom part of it to house your plants.
- Paint it with your favorite color and go crazy with different designs.
- You can do animal faces or whatever you want! It’s your room, after all.
- Lastly, add the soil and plant. Don’t forget to water it regularly!
4. Piggy Bank
Instead of buying a ceramic piggy bank for your kids, just make one! Make an opening in the container where the coins will go through and you are basically done. But, where’s the fun in that, right?
Get your kids involved and grab art materials and draw your best piggy impression. Make the cap look like a snout and you are all set!
5. Vertical Garden
Sure, plastic bottles cause pollution, if disposed of incorrectly. If you look at the bigger picture, did you know that you can use these as a plant box? Yep, impress your guests by making a hanging plant garden in your yard!
Though I suggest you use 2-liter plastic containers to use bigger plants and give them more room to grow. Other materials you’ll need are:
- clothesline
- twine
- picture wire
Use the wires or pins to hang the planters on an old and thin ladder to create an organized vertical garden.
6. Water Bottle Tulips
Add a little aesthetic to your garden by recreating these “tulips”. String lights, a cutter, and sticks are all you need to get your garden “growing”.

7. Pencil Case
Upcycle a soda can or a PET bottle to make a pencil case instead of buying a new one for your kid’s school supplies.
You’ll be teaching your kid a valuable lesson plus, schoolmates and teachers will find it cool, too! Bring out your inner designing expert and anyone should be proud to carry your masterpiece.
Cut two bottles in half and use the bottom part for the container. Fasten the two pieces together using a zipper.
8. Trash Can
Take “going green” to the next level by making plastic bottle waste… to a trash can. Yes, it is possible!
- First, find a solid base and start gluing all the plastic bottles on it.
- Don’t stop until you reach at least 2-3 feet high.
- So that’s probably four levels of plastic bottles before you wrap it all up with a garbage bag.
9. Toy Car
Kids find joy in the simplest of things. Making a toy car out of a plastic bottle will surely pique their interest and all you need are extra bottle caps and a wire that will connect the left and right wheels.
- Poke a small hole on both ends and make sure it is adjacent to each other so it will roll efficiently.
- Finish it off with some killer design and your kid now has an instant toy.
10. DIY Sprinkler
Planning to buy an expensive sprinkler from the hardware? Hold that off and hear me out first. Did you know that all you need is a 2-liter bottle with small holes on it?
Using either a pen or a knife, poke several holes in the bottle and plug it into a hose. It should cover a decent area in your garden and just like that, you saved a remarkable amount of bucks!
11. Jetpack for Kids
Yes, you’ve read that right! If your kid needs an instant costume, then this one will save you a lot of time!
- Get some gray paint from your art supplies and attach two huge plastic bottles to a cardboard.
- Next, put some holes for the strings so your kid can carry it on his/her back.
- If you want some added flare, put some red paper strips to give that propelling effect.
12. Cap Lamp
Now, some of these projects only require the container. So what else can we do with the bottle cap? Easy. Did you know that you can make a lampshade simply by gluing them together?
Just glue the caps together until you form a cylinder and replace your old lamp top. Stare in awe as you surround your room with some very entertaining lighting!
13. Eco-Bricks
This is a project that hits two waste problems: plastic water bottles and packaging. You may not know what to use these eco-bricks for but there is a lot of organization that accepts them as a donation.
