What are protein pancakes, you may ask? Potentially, your new favorite breakfast.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of sweet breakfasts. Unfortunately, aside from worrying about sugar content and general health, there are other problems with this as well. First off, if I carb-load in the morning I find that I’m sometimes hungry by 10 a.m., and that’s no good. Second off, I’ve found that most sweet breakfasts, like cereals, pancakes, and waffles, don’t come in single-serving sizes, making it super easy to overindulge. But don’t worry, I have great news for all of the sweet breakfast fans out there, and it comes in the form of protein pancakes. Specifically, Kodiak Cakes.
While there are a couple of brands that I’ve since tried, these have been my favorite. You can buy a standard box of pancake mix, or a single-serve tin that makes the most perfectly filling pancake.

What are protein pancakes?
Protein pancakes are just that: protein-heavy pancakes. While a normal pancake has an average of 2.4 grams of protein, most protein pancakes contain around 10 grams; the extra protein can come from dried eggs, oats, flax seed, protein isolates extracted from whey, milk, or soy, or some combination of all of those ingredients, depending on the brand. The Kodiak Cakes that I love have 12 grams of protein, thanks in part to oat flour, and protein isolates form wheat, whey, and milk. They’re also whole grain and contain 5 grams of fiber.
In addition to having the powder in a box similar to regular pancake mix, Kodiak Cakes also makes single-serve pancakes in a few different flavors. You simply add water and microwave for one minute. My favorite is the chocolate chip and maple.
Are protein pancakes good for you?
As with everything, it’s important to look at the label. While extra protein can be great if you’re active, it can be too much if you’re not. Protein pancakes can also be higher in carbohydrates and sugar, so make sure to read the label while keeping in mind that the American Heart Association recommends for men to keep their sugar levels at or below 37.5 grams, and for women to keep them at or below 25 grams.
Also, as with most pancakes, adding syrup is delicious but can pack on the calories. Luckily, Kodiak Cakes also makes fruit syrups with cane sugar so that they’re a little healthier than regular maple syrup. There are also low-sugar options for maple syrup like the SweetLeaf Stevia Syrup, and sugar-free versions like Lakanto Maple Flavored Syrup.
