Prepare the plywood that you will use for the box itself by cutting it to the following dimensions: (2) 24 x 18 in. for the box sides, (2) 15 x 18 in. for the box sides, (2) 15 x 22½ in. for the box lid and bottoms.

Next, cut the furring strips for the top lid to rest on. Cut it to four pieces: 2 x 22¼ in. and 2 x 13¾ in.

Step 2: Put the Pieces Together

Now you’re done with the power tools, your kid can now join in the fun of building and putting the pieces together to build your DIY toy storage box.

First of all, lay out all the pieces on the floor so you can see how it will be assembled. Put the bottom part of the box on the leftmost side, followed by the side pieces, and the top part. Just like how you see it in the photo above.

Step 3: Build the Box

Next, build the box by applying wood adhesive on the edges of the boards to build the box. Let it dry for a while and apply ample pressure to make sure the box is in place. Once it is all glued up (except the top part, of course), use your nail gun to fasten the wood together. Nail the corners first.

Once the box is all fastened up with the top part open, measure 3/4 inches from the top of the edges and create a guide for the furring strips. This is where the lip will rest. Measure carefully so that the lid will rest exactly once it is installed.

Again, apply using the wood adhesive before nailing it down to the rest of the toy box.

Step 5: Paint and Design

Now that you have the actual box built, it is time to paint and design what you made. For a more natural look, apply a light-colored paint or something that emulates a stained finish.

This is where your creativity kicks in. Paint the whole box just how you like it to appear. Just remember to paint onto the direction of the wood paint. If you also want to paint the interior, you may do so. Let the paint dry before applying the second coat of paint.

Step 6: Install Casters and Handles

Lastly, it is time to install the casters to the bottom corner of the storage box. Use a 1-inch screw to fasten the casters. Also, measure and find the center of the top lid where you will install the handle. If you wish to install more handles or use a different configuration, you may do so.
