Injured Tortoise Who Lost Shell In Fire Receives Worlds First 3D-Printed Shell

A turtle from Brazil named Freddy has made history as the first turtle with shell printed in a 3D printer. For Freddy, it was not the new mundane addition, but the invention of innovative surgeons who saved his life in this way.

The turtle was hit by a forest fire in which it was seriously injured and its armor was nearly destroyed. Therefore, his chances of survival were minimal. Still, a group of innovators and physicians, gathered under the name The Animal Avengers, did get their hands on Freddy.

A team of somewhat comic names designed new armor based on photos of Freddy and other turtles. Designer Cicero Moraes of São Paulo was the originator of the whole story, sending his design to a dentist and surgeon named Paulo Miyamoto. Miyamoto then created a new armor that looks like a real armor using a 3D printer and is just as important for a single turtle.

Thus, with the rapid action of humans and the use of modern technology, Freddy survived and became the first owner of the first 3D-printed shell. This success could also open the door to greater use of 3D printers in helping endangered animals.
